Mission

Hello and thanks for visiting! I’m Michele, the writer behind From Inwood Out. I’m a local NYC writer who helps curious travelers explore New York State beyond the usual sights. I do this through sharing itineraries, tips, and advice on how to get the most out of your travels around the Empire State.

I also like to throw in stories about growing up in Central New York, living and teaching in New York City, and how my world travels continue to shape my perspective, even when I’m traveling close to home.

Background

I went to college in the same region I grew up in and after graduating, I felt a strong urge to strike out of my small-town surroundings and see the world. I moved to London for six months, working as a barista and a bartender, and when my work visa expired, I learned that I could live abroad for longer periods of time by teaching English.

Teaching gave me the opportunity to live in Japan, South Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam. I met my husband Matt along the way and he became my lifelong travel partner. In 2009, we moved to New York City and our days of extensive international travel decreased.

Then I realized two things:

  1. We didn’t have to live abroad in order to travel to interesting places.
  2. Because I grew up in upstate New York, I had a lot of advice for people who wanted to explore the state but weren’t sure where to go.

I’ve also always been a writer, recording my travels and trying to shape them into interesting stories. Even though I wasn’t traveling internationally as much, I still wanted to write, preferably about travel, so I started taking writing classes the first year I moved here. From Inwood Out helps to satisfy that urge to write and also keeps me exploring my home state.

Where’s Inwood?

Good question. Inwood is located at the northernmost tip of Manhattan. Living here gives us the best of both worlds. Heading south, it’s an easy subway ride to the heart of the city. Or we can jump in our car and be heading upstate on the thruway within just a few minutes from leaving our apartment.

Read this post if you’d like to know more about why we moved to Inwood.

Topics you can expect to read about

I’ll write a lot about New York City, including my fabulous neighborhood to the north. But we also love to head out of Inwood whenever we get the chance.

That means I’ll deliver travel tips on everything I love about New York State, which includes, but is definitely not limited to history, art, craft beverage trails, scenic hikes, waterfalls, good food, friendly people, quirky bed-and-breakfasts, cool small businesses, plus more we have yet to discover.

Get in touch anytime with questions or suggestions on topics you’d like to see covered! Email me at frominwoodout@gmail.com.
